Stevens Garners DPOW After Colgate Victory

Senior DE made eight tackles with a sack in conference win

EASTON, Pa. – Senior DE Jyaire Stevens has secured Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week honors for the first time in his career, coming off an eight-tackle performance at Colgate in week 9.

An International Affairs major from Wappingers Fall, N.Y., Stevens led the Leopards with eight tackles in a 21-16 win over Colgate on Nov. 5. He helped limit the Raiders' read-option rushing attack, which was averaging 169.8 yards per game, to 124 yards. Stevens and the Maroon and White limited Colgate quarterback Michael Brescia to 45 rushing yards.

Stevens was instrumental on Colgate's final drive of the game as he and senior LB Marco Olivas ganged up on Brescia for a sack near midfield on second down. On third down, they teamed up again to slow Brescia for a one-yard gain to force a punt with 5:30 left in the game. Lafayette took over possession and held onto the ball to close out the win.

Lafayette returns to action on Saturday, traveling to the Bronx to face No. 18/23 Fordham, the third national-ranked opponent the Leopards have battled in 2022.
