Softball Opens Conference Play vs. BU

Harvey hits first home run of the season

EASTON, Pa. – Lafayette softball opened Patriot League play with a doubleheader vs. Boston U. on Saturday afternoon at Metzgar Fields. The Leopards dropped game one, 10-2, despite a two-run home run from Grace Harvey and game two by an 8-0 score.

In game one, the visitors scored three runs on three hits with the aid of an error. Lauren Keleher (3-for-3, 6 RBI) drove in two runs with a double down the left field line. The Terriers added five more in the fourth inning when Keleher contributed a two-run home run off Lafayette starter Kinzi Van Wyk.

Lafayette got the offense going in the bottom of the fourth. Harlie Bickett ripped a lead-off double off the wall in center field. The next batter, Grace Harvey smacked a pitch over the right field wall to get the Leopards on the board, trailing 8-2.

The Terriers put away the game in the top of the fifth on Keleher's double that ran the final to 10-2 in five innings.

Van Wyk took the loss, allowing seven earned runs on 10 hits over 3.1 innings. Kailee Sawai threw the final 1.2 innings of relief and struck out one. Lizzy Avery fanned eight Leopard hitters, including six straight at one point, and allowed two runs on three hits over five innings for the circle win.

In the second game, Boston U scored five runs in the fifth and three in the fourth en route to an 8-0 final.

Emily Gant and AJ Huerta-Leipner each plated two runs in the fifth for the early BU lead. Gant drove in two more in the top of the fourth as the Terriers took an 8-0 advantage.

The Leopards put the lead-off batters on in the fourth and fifth innings, but could not capitalize as a double play in the fourth and three strikeouts in the fifth ended the scoring chances. Kaya Ciccone-Cozart had two hits in the game for the Leopards.

Jacqueline Cal was the Leopard pitcher of record, allowing four earned runs on nine hits over 3.1 innings. Freshman Morrigan Gardiner was solid in relief, giving up just one hit against the six batters that she faced. Allison Boaz collected the win, striking out six while allowing four hits over five innings.

Lafayette and Boston U. will wrap up the series with a single game on Sunday at noon.
