LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Lafayette College men's lacrosse team was defeated by Bucknell on Friday night, 19-16. Lafayette is now 4-10 overall and 1-7 in conference play.
The Leopards and Bison took turns on the offensive during the first quarter, with each team netting three goals.
Three of Lafayette's sophomores,
John Mathes,
Peter Lehman and
Charlie Cunniffe, scored before Cunniffe was able to take a final shot with two seconds on the clock to gain the lead.
Their classmate and fellow midfielder
Connor Freeman started the second period with his fourth goal of the season at 13:50.
The Bison would add two to their score before allowing sophomore attacker
Kalman Kraham to sink one off a bad angle at 10:51. Bucknell retaliated with four more goals, making it a 9-6 game going into halftime.
Lehman put the Leopards within one at 14:10 and 13:57, assisted by Cunniffe for his sixth hat trick this season. A Bison goal was waved off before the Warminster, Pa. native tied the game at 11:15.
Bucknell took the lead for the next five minutes with goals from Harry Wellford, Jack Dudas, Dutch Furlong and Danny Striano.
Cunniffe was assisted by Mathes at 3:07 to break the Leopard scoring drought. Mathes tallied his own goal at 1:39.
Furlong added to the Bison lead, set at three above Lafayette to end the third quarter.
Bucknell's advantage was stalled at five with a goal by Lafayette's Lehman. The sophomore Economics major totaled his fifth and final goal of the game at 11:45.
Cunniffe and Freeman each added another at 7:36 and 6:43.
Two more Bucknell goals were enough to seal the game against the Leopards, although Cunniffe put back two of his own at 2:53 and 0:26.
Lafayette's only advantage was in clears (19-25 to 18-20), as Bucknell took charge of shots (50-34), ground balls (40-33), face-offs (21-39 to 18-39) and caused turnovers (14-6).
Freshman goalkeeper
Gabe Cummins made 11 saves for Lafayette. Bucknell's Max Nolan (3), Rich O'Halloran (4) and Jack Van Slyke (3) all shared the net this evening.
The Leopards will play the season-finale match at Virginia on April 28.
