EASTON, Pa. – Lafayette scored three runs in the second inning and never looked back in a 6-4 victory over Wagner in non-conference softball action on Wednesday afternoon.
Â
It was a rare mid-week single game for the Leopards who were coming off a bye weekend in Patriot League play and returned to a windy day at Metzgar Fields.
Â
Lafayette's offensive efforts in the second inning were aided by a pair of Wagner errors.
Natasha Miner (single) and
Bella Lowdermilk (fielder's choice) each drove in runs and another scored on a throwing error.
Â
Lafayette put the lead-off batter on in the first three innings and it continued to pay off in the third.
Kaya Ciccone-Cozart led off with an infield single.
Jasmine Nguyen, who pinch ran for her, later scored on a first-and-third steal play, sacrificing an out for the team's fourth run.
Â
Wagner got the run back in the fourth inning, scoring on a two-out single by Bianca Worthy. The inning ended with the lone run as Worthy was cut down trying to take an extra base on the single. Lafayette led 4-2.
Â
The Leopards answered with a pair or scores in the bottom half of the fourth inning thanks to RBI-singles from freshmen
Harlie Bickett and Ciccone-Cozart. Ciccone-Cozart contributed her first three-hit game of the season.
Â
The Seahawks started to hit Leopard starting pitcher
Kinzi Van Wyk in the fifth inning. She left the game with one out in the inning after giving up an RBI-double to Kate Wolf and a run-scoring single to Mackenzie Vogler to trim Lafayette's margin to 6-4. Leopard reliever
Kailee Sawai used a pop up and a strikeout to end the inning.
Â
Sawai was efficient in her 14
th appearance of the season, allowing just a bunt single in two and two-third innings to earn the first save of her career. Van Wyk registered her fifth win of the season, allowing four runs on seven hits with a strikeout. Â
Â
The Leopards will continue a busy mid-week swing, heading to Drexel for a doubleheader on Thursday at 2 p.m.
