LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Lafayette track and field team opened its season Saturday at the Bison Opener hosted by Bucknell. Athletes from the men's and women's teams secured spots within the top five in several events as well as three All-Time Top 10 performances.
For the women, senior Nava Chevan snagged a second-place finish in the 500-meter run (1:17.21) for an All-Time Top 10 performance. Sophomore Alexa LaSasso finished third in the 500-meter (1:19.61) and fellow sophomore Maeve Waldron placed second in the 400-meter dash with a 59.21 finish. Junior Julia Greeley vaulted 11' 9.75 for a fifth-place finish in the pole vault, and freshman Gabby Buber and sophomore Elena Malone secured sixth-place finishes in the 200-meter (26.18) and 800-meter (2:25.24), respectively. Freshman Ida Moczerniuk secured an All-Time Top 10 performance in the 60-meter dash running a 7.93 for a 12th-place finish.
The women's 4x400 'A' (Cheva, LaSasso, sophomore Katherine Pappas, and junior Sara Tippin) and 'B' (Waldron, Malone, freshman Madeline Convy, and Buber) relays placed fifth and sixth for final times of 4:10.51 and 4:11.76.
On the men's side, junior Jack Lynett pole vaulted 14' 1.25" for a fourth-place finish, sophomore Zach Barban also reeled in a fourth-place finish in the 500-meter run (1:09.62), and fellow sophomore John Paul Pfisterer snagged fourth in the 800-meter run with a final time of 1:59.25. Freshman John Liedtka placed sixth in the 60-meter hurdles (8.45) securing an All-Time Top 10 performance.
The men's 4x400 relay made up of sophomore Roman Conca, junior Ryan Moore, freshman Dexter DeMarco, and Pfisterer placed sixth for a final time of 3:30.73.
"Overall some very good opening meet performances. The coaches were really happy with how the underclass student-athletes performed," said Lafayette head coach Michele Curcio. "We had several first years who excelled."
The Leopards will have some time off and will resume competition at the Spartan Invite in Staten Island, N.Y. on Jan. 12.
