Leopards Draw Fourth-Seeded St. Joseph’s in NCAA First Round

Field hockey will travel to Philadelphia on Nov. 15

EASTON, Pa. - Lafayette field hockey is NCAA Tournament bound for the first time since 2012 after claiming the 2024 Patriot League Championship title on Nov. 9, 2-1 in overtime at American.

The No. 21 Maroon and White have sights set on No. 5 and fourth-seeded Saint Joseph's in a first-round game on Friday, Nov. 15 at 11 a.m.

The Leopards are currently on a six-game win streak, nearing 2023's eight-game record from Sept. 30 to Oct. 27, with an overall record of 14-6 (5-1 PL).

The Hawks, who will host Friday's match-up, earned an automatic bid of their own after defeating No. 15 Massachusetts for a fourth consecutive Atlantic 10 championship. St. Joseph's is 17-3 (6-1) overall and on a three-game victory streak.

Ten teams, including Lafayette, received automatic qualification into the tournament via conference championships with the remaining eight teams selected at-large by the Division I Women's Field Hockey Committee. A team must have an overall won-loss record of .500 or better and complete a minimum of 11 contests to be considered during the at-large selection process.

The tournament begins with two opening-round games on Wednesday, Nov. 13, followed by the first and second rounds on Nov. 15 and 17, hosted at individual campus sites. The semifinals and national championship game (Nov. 22-24) will be played at Phyllis Ocker Field in Ann Arbor, Mich.

No. 21 Lafayette is no stranger to national rating percentage index (RPI) rankings with multiple top-20 marks, including a program-high No. 11 in 2012 on the journey to the previous conference crown. The RPI ranks teams based upon a team's wins and losses and its strength of schedule. Just this year, the Leopards have already fought off four ranked opponents, matching the 2022 slate.
