ITHACA, N.Y. (www.lafayette.edu) - The defending Patriot League Champion Lafayette field hockey team traveled to Ithaca, N.Y., on Wednesday for a matchup against Ivy Leaguer Cornell, but walked away from Schoelkopf Field with a 6-4 loss at the hands of the defending Ivy League Champion Bears.
Cornell (7-5) jumped out to a 3-0 lead over Lafayette when sophomore Anna Starkey scored on her first three shots of the game, each of them coming three minutes apart, early in the first period. Freshman Jennifer Stone (Newtown, Pa./George School) was able to cut the lead by one for Lafayette midway through the first period, and Megan Monahan (Lansdale, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) connected with 7:08 remaining before halftime to put the Leopards' behind by only one.
Senior Kate McMahon gave the Big Red a two-goal lead early in the second half when she scored off a penalty corner pass from Amy Galebach. The Cornell lead grew to 5-2 when freshman Annie O'Rourke took a centering pass from Galebach and beat Lafayette goalie Amy Cohen (Linwood, N.J./Mainland Regional) with 23:17 left.
Lafayette (6-8) again came back to cut the lead to one goal with a late rally. Freshman Melissa Hoh (Zionsville, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) connected on goal with a pass from Monahan with 17:52 remaining in the game and Monahan came back eight minutes later with a goal off a Carolyn Rodichok (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) pass.
Cornell sealed the victory with a reassurance goal from Starkey, her fourth goal of the game, with three minutes remaining.
The Leopards return to Patriot League action when they travel to Worcester, Mass., on Saturday to take on league-leading Holy Cross.
