WORCESTER, Mass. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette field hockey team fell short in its bid to repeat as Patriot League Champions on Friday, as the fourth seeded Leopards fell to the No. 1 seed Holy Cross Crusaders, 2-0, at the league's championship tournament.
Lafayette (8-11, 3-4 Patriot League) managed to hold the league-leading Crusaders scoreless through the first half but the Leopards were also unable to connect on goal in those first 35 minutes. Holy Cross senior forward Colleen Schmitt broke the deadlock with 23:15 left in the second period as she scored the eventual game-winner off a pass from senior Jes Gulino.
Junior forward Mary Beth Clark added an insurance goal for Holy Cross (13-6, 7-0 Patriot League) with 3:52 left in the game and the Leopards saw their chances of advancing to the championship game for the second-straight year slip through their fingers as time expired.
Junior goalkeeper Amy Cohen (Linwood, N.J./Mainland Regional) made seven saves for the Lafayette but the team was outshot 12-6 in the contest by the hosting Crusaders and managed five penalty corners to Holy Cross' eight.
Lafayette is eliminated from the tournament with the loss while Holy Cross advances to the Patriot League Championship title game on Saturday at 2 p.m. against the winner of the Fairfield-Bucknell game this afternoon. Fairfield is the number two seed in the tournament while Bucknell holds the No. 3 spot.
