EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Paul Engelhardt, who has spent the past four years coaching in the Lehigh Valley at various levels, has been named Lafayette assistant baseball coach under Head Coach Joe Kinney.
Engelhardt most recently served as an assistant coach at Muhlenberg College in Allentown. He was primarily responsible for coaching the outfield and for defensive instruction, but also assisted with game strategy and hitting. His duties at Lafayette will include coaching the catchers and outfielders along with assisting with all aspects of the offense.
Engelhardt has other Lehigh Valley coaching ties, serving as head coach for Nazareth in the Blue Mountain League since 1998. He inherited a team with 72 wins in the previous 12 seasons and improved the team to 73 wins in his four-year reign.
"I am excited to have Paul join our staff, and I feel Lafayette baseball will benefit tremendously from his unique experience in amateur baseball," Kinney said. "Paul's baseball knowledge coupled with his administrative experience in running a Blue Mountain League team will assist both in the skill development of our players and with the recruiting and office work involved in a college program."
His coaching experience dates back to 1989 where Englehardt was the assistant baseball coach in the Freemansburg Athletic Association in Freemansburg, Pa. from 1989 through 1992.
A 1996 graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, Engelhardt joins Gregg Durrah on Kinney's staff. He replaces Daryl Evans who was with the program for two seasons before accepting a similar position at Chowan College.
The Lafayette baseball program is on the rise, with five players earning All-Patriot League honors following the 2001 season. Four of them return for the 2001 season led by senior Tye Gonser, junior Matt Tambellini, and current sophomores Adam Rosenberg and Craig Alexander who garnered Freshman All-American honorable mention status in their first campaigns.
Lafayette just completed its fall season at the Metzgar Fields complex. The baseball field itself has seen tremendous improvement in the off-season. A new state-of-the-art scoreboard was added along with an new outfield fence and warning track .
