EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Leopard field hockey team improved to 13-4 overall and 5-2 in league play with a decisive 4-1 victory over American today at Rappolt Field. Lafayette ends the season at No. 2 in the Patriot League while American takes the No. 3 spot.
Junior Megan Monahan (Lansdale, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) put Lafayette on the board late in the first half resulting from a penalty corner off passes from Jennifer Stone (Newtown, Pa./George School) and Meredith Hahn (Hellertown, Pa./Saucon Valley).
The Leopards went up 2-0 with three minutes left in the first half when Hahn scored her sixth goal of the year off a Stone assist.
Lafayette continued to dominate in the second half, scoring two more goals in the first fifteen minutes of play. Junior Beth Gulotta (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Rye Neck) tallied her seventh of the season off a pass from Hahn. Monahan put the Leopards up 4-0 by scoring her 18th goal of the year on an unassisted effort.
Leopard head coach Ann Gold used the opportunity to substitute a number of players for Lafayette who held onto the shutout until the last few moments of the game. American forward Melissa Snyder scored amidst a scramble in front of the cage for the lone Eagle goal of the game.
Senior co-captain Amy Cohen (Linwood, N.Y./Mainland Regional) played the majority of the game in the cage, making four saves while sophomore Casey Devlin (Devon, Pa./Episcopal Academy) stopped two shots. American goalie Laura Miller made five saves for the game.
Lafayette (13-4, 5-2) and American (7-9, 4-3) will face off again as the No. 2 and 3 seeds in the Patriot League Tournament in Worcester, Mass. this weekend. The first round game is on Saturday at 1 p.m.
