EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Despite holding the offensive edge for the majority of the game, the Leopard field hockey team dropped a 1-0 game to Cornell in overtime today at Rappolt Field.
Lafayette outshot Cornell 14-7 and managed 11 penalty corners to the Big Red's six but failed to find the back of the net for the first time this season.
The Leopards had several opportunities to score including a breakaway by sophomore Jennifer Stone (Newtown, Pa./George School). Cornell's goalie Kaitlin Tierney came up big in the first of nine saves she would have on the game.
The two teams headed into extra time where Lafayette had posted a 3-0 record in its past three overtime appearances this season.
The Leopards' best chance came off a shot from junior Beth Gulotta (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Rye Neck) that went just wide left of the cage.
Cornell got only one shot in overtime but it was all it would need as sophomore Carissa Mirasol put in a pass from classmate Karleigh Burns for the gamewinner.
Cornell improves to 7-3 on the season and will travel to upstate New York to take on Big East power Syracuse on Oct. 10 at 7 p.m.
Lafayette (7-3, 2-1) heads north to Hamilton, N.Y. in a Patriot League matchup with Colgate on Saturday at 7 1 p.m.
