WORCESTER, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - The No. 2 seeded Lafayette field hockey team knocked off the No. 3 seed American today in Worcester, Mass. to advance to the Patriot League Championship game to be played tomorrow at 1 p.m.
Sophomore Jennifer Stone (Newtown, Pa./George School) tallied the eventual game-winner just four minutes into the game on an unassisted effort to put the Leopards ahead 1-0.
The two teams traded offensive opportunities throughout the game but couldn't find the back of the net for the next 65 minutes of play. Lafayette goalie Amy Cohen (Linwood, N.Y./Mainland Regional) made five saves in goal while Eagle netminder Lauren McDonnell stopped three shots for American.
In the first semifinal game of the day, Fairfield got on the board at 18:48 in the first half on a penalty stroke by senior Karen Zanleoni. Fairfield made it 2-0 game a minute later when senior Jeannine Harp scored an unassisted goal. The Crusaders cut the lead in half in the second half on a rebound shot by senior Lifon Huynh but it wasn't enough as the Stags held on for the 2-1 win to advance to the title game.
Lafayette and Fairfield will play for the Patriot League Championship title tomorrow at 1 p.m. at the Hart Center Astroturf Field on the campus of Holy Cross. The winner will receive an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
