EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Adam Rosenberg's (Ocean Grove, N.J./Neptune) second home run of the season was of the grand slam variety as he led the Leopards to a 12-7 win over Army in the first of two games at Metzgar Fields. Army came back to win the nightcap 13-9.
The Leopards dug themselves an early hole, trailing 7-0 by the end of the second inning. Army's Kyle Kalkwarf doubled home two runs in the first with the other coming on a fielder's choice. Army tacked on four more runs in the second, two coming on a home run by Buddy Gengler and one on Miguel Gastellum's RBI single.
Lafayette cut the deficit to five with two runs in the third. Senior Ian Burley (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth) plated a run with a groundout. Sophomore Matt Tambellini ((Millville, N.J./Sacred Heart) drove home the second run with a single through the left side.
Lafayette tied the game, 7-7, with five runs in the home half of the fourth. Sophomore Brian Heyesey (Highstown, N.J./Highstown), freshman Jason Boyd (Littlestown, Pa./Littlestown) and Rosenberg all contributed RBI-singles. Burley drove home Boyd with a sac fly before the tying run came plateward on a throwing error.
Lafayette took the lead for good in the sixth when Rosenberg smashed a grand slam to centerfield off of Army reliever Matt Erwin. It was Rosenberg's second game-winning home run of the year.
The Leopards added an insurance run in the sixth, but it was much more than Lafayette reliever Kevin Swords (Staten Island, N.Y./Curtis) would need. Swords, who came on in the top of the fifth, allowed just one hit over three innings. It was the second straight day he shut down the Army offense in relief.
Brian Elliott took the loss for Army, throwing 4.1 innings while allowing nine runs on nine hits and four walks.
In the nightcap, Army again took an early lead, but this time held on for a 13-9 win.
Lafayette scored a run in the first on a lead-off home run from Boyd, his second of the year. Boyd, who has taken over the lead-off spot with the injury to Tye Gonser, is hitting .352 for the season.
Army got to Lafayette starter Ross Butler (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) for four runs in the second. Brandon Boyce singled home the first run, but the biggest hit of the inning came from Josh Holden who connected for a three-run home run to right to give Army a 4-1 lead.
Army made it 7-1 with three more runs in the top of the third on a RBI double from Gengler and a single from Kalkwarf.
Lafayette sliced two runs off the Army lead in the bottom of the third. The Leopards took advantage of three Army errors in the inning. Junior Vince D'Angelis (Montvale, N.J./St. Joseph's Regional) drove home the first run and the other scored on a throwing error.
Army put the game out of reach with five runs in the fourth, two coming on a Josh Minney double. Lafayette did strike back for five of its own in home half of the fourth. Boyd legged out a two-run triple that fell just short of the fence in right center. Burley brought Lafayette within four with a three-run home run, his seventh of the season.
Each team added another a solo home run to make the final 13-8. Kalkwarf connected for his in the top of the sixth. Lafayette's Spence Green (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) hit his first career home run in a pinch-hitting role in the seventh.
Erwin got the win for Army (14-22-1, 8-8), throwing four innings while allowing just one run on three hits. Butler took the loss, tossing two innings while allowing seven runs on eight hits.
Lafayette (9-26, 4-12) will play five straight road games, travelling to Manhattan on Wednesday and on to Annapolis, Md. for its final Patriot League series of the season on Saturday and Sunday.
