WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette field hockey team traveled to West Long Branch, N.J., to open the season versus Monmouth today, and came home with a 3-0 win.
Junior Beth Gulotta (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Rye Neck) broke the scoreless first half by netting an unassisted goal with 18:43 remaining. Gulotta went on to score her second goal of the game off an assist from sophomore Meredith Hahn (Hellertown, Pa./Saucon Valley) to put the Leopards ahead 2-0 going into halftime.
Senior co-captain Amy Cohen (Linwood, N.J./Mainland Regional) spent the majority of time in goal for the Leopards. Cohen led a defense that allowed Monmouth only six shots for the match while Lafayette took 15 on the day.
Sophomore midfielder Jennifer Stone (Newtown, Pa./George School) converted on a penalty stroke with 22:10 left in the game to place Lafayette ahead 3-0.
The Hawk's Kelly Monahan recorded the only defensive save in the game. Monmouth goalkeepers Carrie Colbert and Brittany Kershaw split the time in goal, making 2 and 3 saves, respectively.
Monmouth falls to 0-1 and returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 4 when they travel to Bethlehem, Pa., to take on Lehigh at 7:00 p.m.
Lafayette improves its record to 1-0 before they take on Atlantic-10 foe La Salle at home on Saturday, Sept. 1 at 1:00 p.m..
