EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette field hockey team dominated in their home opener versus La Salle today giving the Leopards a 5-1 win.
Junior Beth Gulotta (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Rye Neck) opened the scoring with an assist from classmate Megan Monahan (Lansdale, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) to put the Leopards ahead 1-0 in the first half.
Monahan netted the eventual game winner less than three minutes later off a pass from sophomore Jennifer Stone (Newtown, Pa./George School).
Monahan notched her second goal of the day on an unassisted effort. Midfielder Monica Patterson (Drexel Hill, Pa./Upper Darby) picked up her first goal of the season off an assist from Monahan to put the Leopards in a commanding 4-0 lead late in the first half.
La Salle got on the scoreboard with only seconds remaining in the first half with a goal by Katie O'Connell off an assist from Jami Wilus.
Senior co-captain Amy Cohen (Linwood, N.J./Mainland Regional) and sophomore Casey Devlin (Devon, Pa./Episcopal Academy) split the time in goal, making 2 and 3 saves, respectively.
Lafayette out shot La Salle 20 to five, and earned 10 penalty corners to the Explorers' two.
La Salle (0-1) returns home to take on Ursinus on Wednesday Sept. 5 at 3:30.
Lafayette improves its record to 2-0 and return to action versus Villanova at home on Wednesday, Sept. 5 at 3:30.
