Field Hockey Wins Thriller In Overtime

Sept. 19, 2001

Final Stats

PHILADELPHIA -- In its first night game of the season, the Lafayette field hockey team defeated Ivy League power Penn in a thrilling overtime win at Franklin Field tonight.

The Leopards grabbed control of the game early as junior Beth Gulotta (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Rye Neck) scored her fifth goal of the season just eight minutes into the contest off a perfectly placed pass from Megan Monahan (Lansdale, Pa./Lansdale Catholic).

Monahan notched her third goal of the season off a dribbling display from the midfield. She dodged two Quaker defenders before finding the back of the net to put the Leopards up 2-0.

Penn's Anna Mitchell scored off of her own rebound to put the Quakers within one going into halftime.

Lafayette controlled the majority of the second half and were within seconds of clinching the game before a penalty corner was awarded to Penn. The Quaker's Mandy Doherty found an open Liz Lorelli who knocked in the equalizer to send the game into overtime at a 2-2 tie.

Monahan took over the flow of the game in overtime and sent in a long shot from the left side of the field. Penn goalie Carrie Wilhelm made the initial save before Lafayette's Meredith Hahn (Hellertown, Pa./Saucon Valley) sent home the game-winner for the 3-2 victory.

Senior co-captain Amy Cohen (Linwood, N.J./Mainland Regional) recorded 12 saves for the Leopards while facing 14 Penn shots. Carrie Wilhelm made 14 saves for Penn while facing 21 Lafayette shots.

Penn (0-3) returns to action next week when they travel to Williamsburg, Va. on Sept. 23 for a 1:00 p.m. game with William & Mary.

Lafayette (4-1, 1-0) will travel to Lewisburg, Pa. for a 1:00 p.m. contest with Patriot League foe Bucknell on Sept. 22.
