EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Despite a strong second half effort, the Lafayette field hockey team suffered its first loss of the season to Big East power Villanova today at Rappolt field.
Playing in their second straight home contest, the Leopards fell behind 1-0 off a goal from the Wildcat's Brooke Bergmann. Villanova took a 2-0 lead eight minutes later when Lauren McCarthy scored off an assist from Bergmann.
Lafayette got on the scoreboard to make it 2-1 when sophomore Meredith Hahn (Hellertown, Pa./Saucon Valley) tallied her first goal of the year off an assist from junior Megan Monahan (Lansdale, Pa./Lansdale Catholic).
The Leopards came storming out in the second half, earning five penalty corners in the first fifteen minutes. Lafayette outshot Villanova 8-5, but failed to reach the back of the cage.
The Wildcats stretched the lead to 3-1 when Krissy Malchitsky tallied her second of the year coming off a Villanova penalty stroke with less than four minutes remaining in the game.
Senior co-captain Amy Cohen (Linwood, N.J./Mainland Regional) minded the cage for Lafayette, recording three saves while facing 11 Villanova shots in the contest. Megan Helwig made eight saves for Villanova while facing 12 Lafayette shots.
Villanova (2-1, 0-0) returns to action next week when they travel across Philadelphia to take on Penn on Sept. 12 at 7:00.
Lafayette (2-1, 0-0) opens its Patriot League season at Ursinus on Sept. 8 at 1:00 p.m.
