Field Hockey Wins East-West Showdown vs. Stanford

Sept. 14, 2002

Final Stats

ITHACA, N.Y. (www.lafayette.edu) - Senior leadership is a key ingredient to any winning formula, and Lafayette seniors Beth Gulotta (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Rye Neck), Erica Bartsch (Downingtown, Pa./Henderson) and Megan Monahan (Lansdale, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) all made big contributions in the Leopards' 4-3 victory against Stanford University on Saturday at Cornell.

The Leopards' fought back from a deficit three times on the afternoon to win their third straight, and improve to 3-2 on the season.

Down 1-0, Gulotta got the Leopards on the board just before halftime off of a feed from Monahan.

Gulotta connected for her fifth goal in the last three games early in the second-half off of a Meredith Hahn (Hellertown, Pa./Saucon Valley) assist to knot the score at 2.

Amanda Billmyer tallied her second goal of the second-half putting Stanford ahead 3-2 at 49:55, but Leopard goaltender Casey Devlin (Devon, Pa./Episcopal Academy) kept the Cardinal in check for the final 20 minutes.

In crunch time the Leopards' turned to their captains, and Bartsch and Monahan led a furious Lafayette rally.

Monahan found an open Bartsch in front of the net at 57:24 to tie the game at 3, and with just over two minutes to play Monahan scored the game winner courtesy of Jennifer Stone (Newtown, Pa./George School) and Hahn.

The Leopards will try for four straight when they face-off against Cornell on Sunday in Ithaca, N.Y.
