EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette field hockey team struggled early to find its rhythm in Wednesday night's contest against the University of Pennsylvania, but once the Leopards caught fire they torched the Quakers' defense, and never looked back, winning 4-2.
Down 1-0 midway through the first half the Leopards (5-2) hit their stride, and junior Meredith Hahn (Hellertown, Pa./Saucon Valley) connected off of a Megan Monahan (Lansdale, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) pass to tie the score.
Minutes later the speedy Leopards struck again. Monahan hooked up with Hahn again to give the Leopards a 2-1 advantage going into the half. The goal was Hahn's fourth in two games.
Lafayette's team speed on the outside hurt Pennsylvania (0-3) all game, and the Leopards' forwards Hahn and Monahan were having their way in the open space.
With the Quakers' reeling, Lafayette junior Jennifer Stone (Newtown, Pa./Jennifer Stone) took a Hahn feed and maneuvered in tight quarters to find the back of the cage for her first goal of the season, putting the Leopards ahead 3-1.
Pennsylvania fought back and got within one after Jackie Lange beat Leopard net minder Casey Devlin (Devon, Pa./Episcopal Academy), swinging the momentum in favor of the visiting Quakers.
However, Stone was there again to save the Leopards. The junior created space and blistered a shot from the top of the circle to end the Quakers' rally, and give Lafayette a comfortable 4-2 lead.
Devlin stood tall in net in the end, making nine saves on the evening, and preserving the Leopards fifth straight victory.
Lafayette travels to Washington, D.C. on Sunday for its Patriot League opener against American University. Face off is scheduled for 11 a.m.
