April 21, 2004

Box Score

EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Lafayette scored seven runs over the fifth and sixth innings to march to a 9-2 win over East Stroudsburg in non-conference baseball action on Wednesday at the Class of 1978 Stadium.

The Leopards (17-19) trailed through the first two and a half innings of the game after surrendering a run in the top of the first. East Stroudsburg opened with singles by Jacob DeBoer (2-for-4) and John Molyneux. A sac bunt moved both runners into scoring position and DeBoer later scored on a wild pitch.

Lafayette starter Matt Revelle (3-3) went unscathed over his final four innings, surrendering just one more hit, a single in the fourth. He struck out three and walked one while allowing one run over five innings for the win.

Matt Revelle scattered three hits to pick up his third win of the season on Wednesday.

The Leopards tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the third inning. Ian Law, who reached on a one-out single, set the stage for cleanup hitter Adam Rosenberg to drive him in. Rosenberg, who is leading the team in hitting, obliged, ripping a double down the leftfield line. Rosenberg finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBI.

In the bottom of the fourth, Lafayette took its first lead of the game. Eric Vacca (2-for-3) smoked a ball to centerfield to plate Brian Astry and give Lafayette a 2-1 advantage. The go-ahead double was Vacca's first career extra-base hit at Lafayette.

Lafayette broke the game open with seven runs over the fifth and sixth innings. Adam Bucci knocked in a run with an RBI-single and David Drechsel's first career triple brought Bucci home. The Leopards added another run on a wild pitch to lead 5-1.

East Stroudsburg (15-25) got one run back in the top of the sixth. Lafayette reliever Matt Kamine walked the first batter of the inning and hit the second. A fielding error left the bases loaded with no outs. Kamine struck out the next batter, but then allowed a run to score on a wild pitch. He settled down and retired the final two batter of the inning on pop ups.

In the sixth, Lafayette struck for four more runs off East Stroudsburg starter Ryan Amey. Boyd (single), Rosenberg (double) and Bucci (sac fly) all knocked in runs, and the Leopards added a fourth score on a fielding error to take a 9-2 lead. Amey (1-7) was charged with the loss, allowing nine runs (8 earned) on 12 hits over six innings.

Kamine worked a scoreless seventh and John Fugett and Drew Moyer pitched scoreless eighth and ninth innings to close out the game. Fugett fanned two of the three batters he faced and did not allow a hit.

Lafayette returns to action in a crucial conference series at Lehigh on Saturday and Sunday. The Leopards sit in second place in the Patriot League standings with a 9-7 mark. Lehigh and Bucknell rest two games behind Lafayette with 7-9 records, while Navy (6-10) and Holy Cross (5-11) are also in the hunt. Army has already clinched the regular-season title and will host the three-team Patriot League Tournament on May 8-9. Navy hosts Army and Holy Cross travels to Bucknell in the other weekend conference action.
