NEW YORK, N.Y. - Freshman Brian Vail qualified for the IC4A Championships with a second-place finish in the 800m to highlight Lafayette's appearance in the Great Dane Classic on Sunday. The event was hosted by the University at Albany, at the Armory Track and Field Center in New York City.
Junior Daria Szkwarko set a personal record and equaled the school record in the pole vault with a height of 11-3 3/4, good for second in the event. Pamela Glennon was third in the shot put at 41-1 3/4. Lafayette's women were fifth out of 13 squads competing, while the men were seventh of 12.
Vail finished the 800m with a time of 1:54.77, and Aaron Buchman and Peter Reynolds were fifth and sixth for the Leopards. Two other men's distance runners had top-three finishes; Nicholas Birosik was second in the 5000m (15:27.78) and Alex Wechsler placed third in the mile (4:18.40).
The Leopard distance runners set the pace for the women, as Meghan Baker (second, 800m), Brittany Waldron (fourth, 1000m), Taryn Landers and Devon Landers (third and fifth, 3000m), Amanda Lalley (third, 5000m) and Lindsay Bryant (fifth, 5000m) all turned in formidable times.
The men had a strong showing in the field events, with three of the top six places in the weight throw. Jonathan Rowe was third with a heave of 49-9 1/4, and Tyler Jones and Michael DeGregorio were fifth and sixth. Jones claimed second in the shot put with a toss of 49-8 1/2, and Jeffrey Sejour was second in the triple jump at 46-1 1/4.
