EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - In its best offensive output of the season, the Lafayette field hockey team downed La Salle, 5-4, in an overtime contest Tuesday night at Rappolt Field.
Freshman defender Maggie Condon provided more than an offensive spark for the Leopards, as the rookie registered three goals to lead the Lafayette attack. Condon now leads the Leopards with a team-best four goals on the season.
In a gritty, physical dual, both teams exchanged goals throughout the 79-minute affair. La Salle got on the board first, as Allison Geiger and Colleen Nesbitt connected on a penalty corner to put the Explorers ahead 1-0 just over ten minutes in.
Condon responded quickly and recorded her first goal on the night at the 13:27 mark as she blasted a rebound past La Salle keeper Ellen Axelsen. Just over three minutes later, La Salle would jump ahead again, 2-1, on a Suzanne Strocen score from Christy Miller. Covered by defenders all over, Strocen was able to get the ball past Lafayette keeper Jill Lambert.
Lafayette netted two goals before the half to take a 3-2 advantage into the intermission. Freshman forward Lindsay Welch scored her first collegiate goal, as senior forward Diane Shane found the rookie on a breakaway to make it 2-2 at the 18:25 mark. Four-plus minutes later, Shane turned around and registered her first goal of the season, as the veteran slipped the ball past the right post to put the Leopards up 3-2.
Coming out of halftime, La Salle wasted no time tying the game at 3-3, as Emilie Stewart capitalized on a penalty corner situation 4:47 into the half. La Salle took over the lead at the 50:15 mark on an unassisted goal off the stick of Whitney Madron, as the midfielder got the putback over Lambert.
Trailing 4-3, Condon caught fire to score the ensuing two goals for the Leopards. With just under 16 minutes remaining in regulation, Condon netted the game-tying goal as she took a penalty corner, stepped in bounds and received the pass from junior forward Maggie DeFilippo for the score.
The teams went toe-to-toe in the overtime period, as both recorded two shots during the extra session. La Salle's Stewart took a shot for the Explorers, but Lambert was able to come up with the key stop. Gaining momentum and ball possession, senior midfielder Amanda Eggleston found Condon, who blasted the game-winner to the middle of the cage.
Lafayette came out with the hard-fought victory, but La Salle outshot the Leopards 19-14, while both teams earned seven penalty corner opportunities.
Lambert recorded 10 saves, including eight in the opening half, while Axelsen finished with all four of her saves in the first half.
With the victory, Lafayette improved to 5-6, ending a two-game losing skid. La Salle dropped to 2-10 on the season.
The Leopards face a tough test on Saturday, Oct. 8 as the plays host to No. 4 and undefeated American in its second Patriot League contest at 1:00 p.m.
