EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Lafayette's track and field team opened the 2005-06 indoor season in style in the Leopards' only home meet of the winter season. Both the men and women posted solid showings among four other teams at the Lafayette Invitational on Friday night at Kirby Sports Center. .
Also competing in the non-scored invite were Saint Joseph's, Rider, Moravian and East Stroudsburg.
Both the men and women started the meet strong in the field events, posting a combined eight top three finishes. Junior Steve Ekema-Agbaw took top honors in the men's triple jump with a 13.66-meter hurl. Classmate Tyler Jones edged teammate Jonathan Rowe to take first in the 35-pound weight throw, slinging 15.91 meters. Jones also took second in the shot put event at 15.46 meters.
Turning in a first-place finish for the women in the field was senior Daria Szkwarko, as the veteran cleared 9'10" to win the pole vault. Szkwarko escaped teammate Tobie Langsam, who placed second (9'4"). Sophomore Emily Cholak also helped the Leopards, posting a strong second-place finish in the women's triple jump (10.86m). A pair of sophomores turned in a solid showing in the 20-pound weight event, as Ashley Harbin and Andrea Cerbie finished second and third, respectively. Cerbie went on to take second in the shot (12.33m).
In the later track events, the Leopard women got things started with a pair of top three finishes in the 60-yard hurdles, as Jessica Buzzell (8.52) and Alison Crowley (8.63) took second and third, respectively. Sophomore Tom Blenk (7.51) turned in a third-place finish in the same event.
Five Lafayette women bolstered a 15-point effort in the 440-yard dash, gaining valuable team points for the 'Pards. Senior Elizabeth Rybas paced the bunch with a fourth-place finish in 1:01.88. The women continued to build their lead, helped by a first-place finish in the 500-meter run from senior Deborah Fink (1:19.62).
In the ensuing event, the 880-yard run, Lafayette claimed the top two spots as junior Meghan Baker (2:21.91) and sophomore Brittany Waldron (2:23.43) earned first and second, respectively. The men also took a pair of top-two finishes in the 880m, led by sophomore Peter Reynolds in first (1:58.40). Less than a second later, classmate Aaron Buchman crossed the line in second (1:59.31).
In the final women's event before the relays, senior Kate Evangelista brought home a second place finish in the 220-yard dash in 27.36.
The Lafayette women's relay took third, while the men took fourth in the 4x440m relay.
Lafayette does not return to action until Army's Carlton Crowell Invitational on Jan. 7 at West Point.
