LEWISBURG, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Bucknell swept Lafayette in a rainy Saturday baseball doubleheader at Depew Field. In game one, Bucknell had 11 hits to Lafayette's 10, but the Bison's hits proved more timely as they led to an 8-1 Patriot League victory. In the second game of the twinbill, Lafayette ran out of time, losing a 4-3 decision in a game that was shortened to five and a half innings due to rain.

In the opener, Bucknell scored two runs in the first inning and kept the Lafayette offense in check the rest of the game. Chris Brannan and Jason Buursma each drove in runs for Bucknell off Lafayette starter Matt Revelle.

Lafayette (15-21, 3-8) did not get to Bucknell starting pitcher Matt Curry until the fifth inning. James Conrad (2-for-3) smacked a one-out single. Then, with two outs in the inning, Ian Law doubled to right center to send Conrad plateward and make the score 2-1.

Bucknell (12-22, 6-8) put the game away with six runs in the home half of the inning, five off Revelle and one against reliever Jason Morytko. Brannan and Buursma both doubled in a pair to run the final to 8-1.

Revelle (4-4) took the loss, allowing seven runs on nine hits over four complete innings. Morytko finished off the fifth inning and allowed one run on two hits on the afternoon. Curry (4-4) collected the win, allowing one run on 10 hits over seven innings. The start of the first game was delayed an hour and a half due to weather.

In the second game, Lafayette could not hold onto a pair of early leads. Bucknell then scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth and slipped past Lafayette, 4-3, in the nightcap.

The Leopards opened with a run in the game's first at-bat. With Frank Cortazar and Law aboard with two outs in the inning, Mike Raible ripped a single through the left side.

The one-run advantage was short-lived as Bucknell scored twice in the bottom half of the inning. Buursma again proved to be the Leopards' downfall, singling home two runs off Lafayette starter Matt Kamine before Kamine ended the rally by striking out Brannan. Buursma ended the day 5-for-6 with five RBI.

Senior Adam Bucci and junior Clint Losch each used singles to rightfield to drive in runs in the top of the third. Law (single) and Kevin Leasure (single) both trotted home to hand the Leopards a 3-2 advantage.

In the home half of the fourth inning, Bucknell pushed across two runs on Matt Capece's double to lead 4-3.

The game scheduled for nine innings, never even reached six complete innings, as the contest was called due to rain in the bottom of the sixth inning. Bucknell's one-run lead turned into a one-run decision.

Kamine (1-4) was charged with the loss, surrendering four runs on nine hits over 5.1 innings. Tim Peacock and Buursma both tossed three innings for the Bison. Peacock was credited with the win, giving up three runs on nine hits.

The two teams will resume the series tomorrow at noon, with a seven-inning and nine-inning game scheduled for the afternoon.
