EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - For 35 minutes, the Lafayette field hockey team hung with the seventh best team in the country. However, the Leopards could not keep up the pressure and dropped a 7-0 decision to No. 7 Penn State Friday under the lights at Rappolt Field.
After holding the Nittany Lions scoreless over the opening 24 minutes, the Leopards gave up just one goal before the break. Penn State's Britney Long took a shot five yards out off a pass from Natalie Berrena to register the game's first goal.
Lafayette entered the break having played a solid first half against a quicker, more athletic Penn State squad.
In the second stanza, the Nittany Lions did not waste any time, as they scored two consecutive goals less than four minutes into the period to pull away from Lafayette. Over the next 18 minutes, Penn State would score four insurance goals, including a pair from Shaun Banta.
Junior keeper Jill Lambert got a workout in the cage, recording 15 saves over her 53 minutes. Penn State's converted their offensive accuracy into 22 shots on goal, while Lafayette registered one.
Twenty-three members of Lafayette's roster saw action in the contest, including sophomore goalkeeper Caitlin Burke. The back-up goalie earned her first action this season with just under 17 minutes in the cage. She recorded five saves.
Junior forward Maggie DeFilippo, sophomores Virginia Satterthwaite and Laura Fabian, and freshman forward Lindsay Welch all tallied shots for the Leopards.
With the loss, Lafayette dropped to 2-3 on the season, while Penn State improved to 8-1.
The Leopards return to Rappolt Field Sunday, Sept. 18 as they host No. 19 Delaware at 1 p.m.
