EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - For the second consecutive game, the Lafayette field hockey team played alongside one of the top teams in the country - for one period. On Sunday, Sept. 18, Lafayette surrendered five first-half goals in a 5-1 loss to nationally ranked Delaware at Rappolt Field.
The contest marked the second straight game Lafayette hosted a ranked opponent as the Leopards fell to No. 7 Penn State on Friday, Sept. 16 before dropping it's fourth straight loss to No. 19 Delaware Sunday.
The Blue Hens got on the board early as junior Amanda Warrington took a pass from classmate Molly Burke and lofted the ball over Lafayette goalkeeper Jill Lambert's reach less then three minutes in. Delaware extended its lead at the 20-minute mark with a goal off the stick of rookie Nikki Hinsley to make it 2-0. Freshman Erin Marihugh earned the assist on the play.
Delaware played a very balanced first half, as the team peppered its goals throughout, scoring again with 16:34 remaining as senior Amber Deimler got past Lambert on a pass from junior Kaili Kao. The Blue Hens continued to break through the Lafayette defense, adding two insurance goals in the final two minutes of the first period.
In the second stanza, Lafayette held the red hot Blue Hens scoreless with immense defensive pressure and key stops during five Delaware penalty corners. The Leopards got on the board with 12:17 remaining in regulation off a penalty corner of their own. The textbook play from junior forward Maggie DeFilippo to sophomore forward Laura Fabian kept the Leopards from being shutout. Fabian took the perfect pass from DeFilippo on the left side and blasted the ball past Delaware keeper Megan Allen.
Lambert finished the game with nine saves in just over 50 minutes in the cage. For the second straight game, back-up keeper Caitlin Burke suited up for the Leopards and recorded two saves in her 19 minutes. Junior defender Emily Goldman also picked up her third defensive save on the year.
Delaware held the advantage with nine penalty corners to Lafayette's six, while the Blue Hens outshot the Leopards 23-9 on the day.
DeFilippo led the Leopards with three shots, while Fabian and senior midfielder Amanda Eggleston chipped in with two.
The Leopards fell to 2-4 with the loss, while Delaware improved to 5-3.
Lafayette continues its nine-game home stand on Wednesday, Sept. 21 as the team hosts Saint Joseph's at 7 p.m.
