Field Hockey Drops Double-OT Heartbreaker To Columbia

Sept. 27, 2005

Box Score

EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Regulation was not enough to settle the score between Lafayette and Columbia's field hockey teams, as double-overtime was forced on a chilly Tuesday night at Rappolt Field. After over 90 minutes, Columbia came out on top, 2-1.

The Leopards seemed to be in control of the game throughout most of the opening stanza, jumping ahead 1-0 on a goal from senior midfielder Jenna Bratz. Her second on the season, Bratz scored unassisted on a rebound off Columbia starting keeper Kristina George at the 11:57 mark.

Following the goal, Columbia head coach Katie Beach went with freshman goalkeeper Gena Miller, who shutout the Leopards over the next 70 minutes.

Sitting on the slim 1-0 lead coming out of the intermission, the Lafayette defense got a workout in the second period. The Lions registered seven shots, including the game-tying goal of the stick of junior Ramie Merrill on the penalty corner with 66:16 on the clock.

Heading into the first overtime session, Lafayette registered four shots, including two penalty corner opportunities. Junior keeper Jill Lambert knocked away the Lions' lone shot on goal for the period, and neither team could find the net over the next six minutes.

Lafayette had its chances again in the second overtime, as junior forward Maggie DeFilippo took two consecutive hard shots, only to have them batted away by Miller. Moments later, Columbia was awarded a penalty corner and capitalized. With just over six minutes remaining, junior Kim Branich took the push on the left side from senior Erin Wesseldine, who registered her second assist on the night.

Lambert recorded eight saves in the complete game, while Columbia made nine stops. The Leopards outshot the Lions, 22-15, as both teams turned in ten shots on goal.

The loss dropped Lafayette to 4-5 on the season, while Columbia evened its record at 4-4.

The Leopards open Patriot League play Friday, Sept. 30 as the team hosts archrival Lehigh under the lights at 7 p.m.
