EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - On the opening day of Patriot League action, Lafayette dropped a tough loss to archrival Lehigh, 1-0, on a chilly Friday night at Rappolt Field.
Both teams struggled to find the net early, but picked up the offense in the second half. The game remained scoreless over the first 63:36 behind solid defensive efforts on both sides.
Lafayette gave up what would be prove to be the game-winning goal with 7:24 remaining in regulation. Lehigh capitalized on a penalty corner as senior Mary Beth Kuenne pushed the ball to classmate Marissa Iannarone for the score.
The Mountain Hawks outshot the Leopards 20-12, registering four more goals than Lafayette in each respective half.
Junior keeper Jill Lambert saw all 70 minutes in goal and turned away 11 shots on the night, while Lehigh's Meghan Gove recorded seven saves.
Junior forward Maggie DeFilippo and sophomore forward Laura Fabian each totaled two shots on goal to lead the Leopards' attack. Freshman defender Maggie Condon also recorded her first collegiate defensive save early in the game to maintain the scoreless tie.
Lafayette fell to 4-6 on the season and 0-1 in Patriot League play, while the Mountain Hawks improved to 5-7 and 1-0 in league action.
The Leopards return to action Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 7:00 p.m. as the team hosts American at Rappolt Field.
