NEW YORK, N.Y. (www.lafayette.edu) - Performances from Steve Ekema-Agbaw and Ashley Harbin highlighted a plethora of solid all-around performances for Lafayette at the New York City Gotham Cup on Friday night at the city's 168th St. Armory.
Overall, the women finished third, while the men came in ninth.
Ekema-Agbaw and Harbin both registered personal bests, while also qualifying for the IC4A and ECAC Regional Championships, respectively. Ekema-Agbaw, a junior from Bloomsburg, Pa., took third in the triple jump (48'2.5"), and Harbin, a sophomore out of Tennessee, topped her personal best with a 53' 1/4" sling that earled her third in the weight throw.
On the women's side, the 4x800-meter relay team of Deborah Fink, Brittany Waldron, Meghan Baker and Katie Schultes took first with a time of 9:38.78. Shaving 18 seconds off her previous personal best, Schultes came in first in the 3000-meter run (10:05.25). Senior Daria Szkwarko placed second in the pole vault (10'10").
Junior Tyler Jones, who qualified to participate in the IC4A Championships last week, took second in the shot put with a 52.5' heave. Following Ekema-Agbaw in sixth was senior Jeff Sejour, who landed a 46'10.75" triple jump.
Overall, the Leopards ended the day with a respectable 18 top-10 finishes. The team returns to action on Jan. 21 in Bethlehem, Pa. The Leopards will go head-to-head against long-time rival Lehigh beginning at 1 p.m.
