EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Both teams played through a steady downpour but it was Rider coming out on top in a tight 2-1 decision over Lafayette in non-league field hockey action on Wednesday night at Rappolt Field.
The game opened with Rider (8-4) scoring just 1:33 into the contest, as freshman midfielder Erin McGinnis chipped the ball to teammate Tricia Crotty for her first of two goals on the night. The Broncs played the ball deep into the Lafayette (2-10) end through the opening five minutes, but the Leopard defensive corps, backed by seniors Chrissy Fallivene, Emily Goldman, Lauren Cash and sophomore Jaclyn DiSanti, did a solid job keeping the attack out of the scoring circle.
As Lafayette picked up the pressure on both ends, senior forward Maggie DeFilippo scored the equalizer in the 26th minute, taking a long pass from sophomore midfielder Maggie Condon from ten yards out. It was DeFilippo's second goal on the year.
The scoreboard was tied 1-1 at the break, but it was Lafayette coming out aggressive in the second half. The Broncs held a thin 7-6 shot advantage after the break. However, the Leopards' let one slip by on a penalty corner, marking Crotty's second goal on the night, at the 37-minute mark.
Over the next several minutes, Fallivene and Goldman broke up separate Rider breakaways to avoid a 2-on-1 and any chance of a Rider insurance goal.
The Leopards had a handful of opportunities to get back in the game, but the Broncs defense and keeper Krysta Bearish denied the net. The Leopards best chance came on a shot just inches wide-left off the stick of freshman forward Caitlin Titus.
Lafayette senior keeper Jill Lambert recorded six saves, while Bearish collected three for the Broncs. Overall, Rider out-shot Lafayette 14-8.
A pair of weekend games in Washington, D.C. awaits the Leopards, beginning with a Patriot League match-up against defending champion American on Saturday at noon. Lafayette then takes on Georgetown on Sunday with a noon start scheduled.
