EASTON. Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Set to play its final four regular season games at home, the Lafayette field hockey team started things off on the right foot with a 2-1 overtime win over Monmouth on Wednesday night at Rappolt Field.
The Lafayette (3-12) attack was busy all night long, as the Leopards out-shot the Hawks by a 25-9 margin, including a 15-6 advantage after intermission.
The teams played through a scoreless second half and entered the extra session tied, 1-1. However, it didn't take more than a minute for junior forward Laura Fabian to earn the Leopards their seventh penalty corner of the night. Sophomore midfielder Maggie Condon didn't let the opportunity go to waste, scoring her first game-winner of the year from senior captains Maggie DeFilippo and Emily Goldman just 49 seconds into overtime.
Lafayette drew first blood just four-plus minutes into the game, as freshman midfielder Amanda Saber came up with her first collegiate goal. She beat Monmouth keeper Chelsea Farley, who entered the game leading the nation in saves, to score unassisted.
Monmouth's Kelly Crist scored the equalizer in the 28th minute, which ended the scoring for either team in regulation.
DeFilippo accounted for seven of Lafayette's 25 shots, while Condon and Fabian notched five and four, respectively. Senior goalie Jill Lambert was credited with five saves on the night.
The victory marked Lafayette's third straight over Monmouth, while halting the Hawk's three-game win streak.
The Leopards return to the Rappolt Field turf for a critical Patriot League contest against Colgate on Saturday at 11 a.m.
