EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Billy Simmermacher fired a 73 to capture runner-up honors and lead Lafayette to a second-place finish at the St. Peter's Quad Match on Thursday, Oct. 5 at the Rock Spring Country Club.
Simmermacher's round, good for two-over on the par 71, 6,590-yard layout, gave the Leopards a significant start to their total of 305, which was three strokes off the host Peacocks, which finished at 302. Chris Merce shot a one-under par 70 and was the medalist.
Freshmen Matt Ehrlich and Reed Valutas both recorded rounds of 77 and Brandon Mitchel shot a 78 for Lafayette, which outpaced Wagner (314) and Manhattan (336) in its first quad meet of the year.
Lafayette also competed at the Mulekicker Fall Classic at West Point over the weekend, with a far less satisfying result, where the Leopards placed last in the traditionally strong field of 14 schools.
Anoop Shah, Pat Kelly, Ehrlich and Steve Melnic all recorded 36-hole scores of 161 to tie for 48th. Lafayette shot a 318 on Saturday and a 324 on Sunday for a total of 642.
The event was held at the West Point Golf Course (par 70, 6,036 yards) on the campus of the United States Military Academy.
