WASHINGTON, D.C. (www.lafayette.edu) - Holy Cross broke a 2-2 halftime score with three straight goals after the break to escape with a 5-2 win over Lafayette in the late game of Patriot League semifinal action on Saturday on the campus of top-seeded American.
Lafayette hung with the No. 2 Crusaders through the first 35-plus minutes, but gave up what would be the game-winner to Holy Cross' Kristen Shultz just 4:33 into the second stanza. The Leopards were unable to beat Holy Cross keeper Erin Singleton to come up with the equalizer.
The Leopards converted on a penalty corner to go ahead 1-0 just 7:20 into the contest, as sophomore Maggie Condon took a pass from classmate Lauren Jones for the score. It was Condon's fourth goal of the season and Jones' first assist.
After giving up back-to-back Holy Cross goals, the Leopards put themselves back in contention as freshman forward Caitlin Titus found herself open in the circle and skirted the ball past Singleton for her second goal in as many games.
The Leopards' maintained momentum through a tough second half and managed to out-shoot Holy Cross 11-7 on the afternoon. The Lafayette defensive corps of Jones, junior Chrissy Fallivene, senior Emily Goldman and sophomore Jaclyn DiSanti held 2006 Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year, Tara Welch, to just one goal on a single shot all day.
Condon peppered Singleton with a team-high three shots on goal, while Titus and freshman midfielder Amanda Saber accounted for the remaining two.
Lafayette finished its 2006 campaign with a 5-14 overall record and its first trip to the Patriot League Tournament since 2003. Holy Cross advanced to take on No. 1 American, who downed Bucknell in Saturday's early game, for the Patriot League title.
