ANNAPOLIS, Md. (www.lafayette.edu) - Senior Deborah Fink's win in the 500-meter run highlighted a fourth-place finish for the Lafayette women's track and field team. The men finished fifth at the 2006 Indoor Patriot League Championships, which were hosted by Navy at the academy's Hasley Fieldhouse.
Fink, who posted the fastest time in the conference at last week's Lafayette-Rider Invitational, represented the Leopards' first win in the 500m since Leslie McCant in 1992. Fink clocked in at 1:16.65.
Fink also teamed with classmate Kate Evangelista, junior Meghan Baker and sophomore Brittany Waldron to finish second in the 4x800m relay (9:12.46). The women also finished second in the 4x400m relay, as freshman Meaghan Darling and senior Elizabeth Rybas joined Fink and Evangelista. The foursome finished in 3:57.60.
A trio of silver-medal performances highlighted the individual side of things, as Baker (800m; 2:15.12) and Evangelista (400m; 58.68) took second in their respective events. Sophomore Katie Schultes just missed the 3000m title and placed second with a time of 10:06.01. Schultes showed consistency in the distance events, as she took third in the 5000m (17:28.53).
In the field, sophomores Ashley Harbin and Emily Cholak both came away with third-place efforts in their respective events. Harbin threw the 20 lb. weight 53'1", while Cholak's 17'8 ¾" long jump earned her the bronze.
On the men's side, a pair of sprinters headlined a respectable day for the Lafayette men. Sophomore Tom Blenk finished second in the 55m hurdles (7.85), and junior Travis Hutson took third in the 55m dash (6.60). Also placing third, sophomore Alex Wechsler ran the 1000m event in 2:28.50.
Senior Jonathan Rowe and junior Steve Ekema-Agbaw both came away with second-place performances in the field. Rowe's 54'3 ¼" heave in the 35 lb. weight throw and Ekema-Agbaw's 45'3" triple jump were the top Lafayette performances for the men in the field. Senior and defending indoor triple jump champion Jeff Sejour took third with a 45'1/4" mark. Junior Tyler Jones finished fourth in the shot put (52' 6 ½").
The Bucknell women and Army men came away league champions.
The conference championships close out the regular season for the 'Pards, as select Lafayette athletes will throw their hands in the regional pot on March 4-5 at Boston University. Those who qualified throughout the season will partake in the men's IC4A and women's ECAC Championships in two weeks.
