ANNAPOLIS, Md. (www.lafayette.edu) - Four Lafayette school records fell on the second day of Patriot League Championships on Friday at Navy, led by Liz Geary, who snapped a pair of marks in consecutive events in the morning preliminaries.
Geary broke standards in the 100 breast and 100 back that were set in 1999 and 1993, respectively. First, she took aim at the 100 breast record of 1:08.28, held by Corinne Brophy, and eclipsed that time by nearly three seconds, finishing in 1:05.46.
After the men's 100 breast competitors were out of the pool, Geary lined up for the 100 back. The sophomore clocked in at 58.45, besting the previous top time of 58.78, set 13 years ago by Christine Knudsen. That mark was the oldest school record on the women's side.
Geary placed third in the 100 breast (1:05.68) and fifth in the 100 back (59.04) in the evening finals.
Senior Greg Van Volkenburg broke the men's 100 back record in the finals on his way to a fourth-place showing in the event. His time of 50.86 was 0.13 seconds faster that Javier Fente, who set the record in 1995. Van Volkenburg was just shy of the record in the prelims, as he clocked in at 51.05.
The 200 medley relay squad of Shelby Grabowski, Geary, Kerry Nichols and Marcella Nehrbass lowered the school record to 1:49.32, shaving almost a second off last year's standard set by Julie Sauer, Geary, Tory Littlefield and Erin Rosensteel. Lafayette placed fifth in the event.
Nichols and Sauer both placed seventh after qualifying for the A finals in their events. Nichols went 58.67 in the 100 fly, and Sauer gave Lafayette two top-eight finishers in the 100 back with a time of 59.90.
The 100 back was also well-represented in the B finals, with Michelle Oswald (12th, 1:01.15), Grabowski (13th, 1:01.30) and Samantha Morse (14th, 1:01.81) accumulating 12 team points for the Leopards.
The Lafayette women also had multiple competitors in the consolation finals in the 400 IM (Lauren Bedard, 9th and Paige Hulsizer, 12th), 100 fly (Littlefield, 9th and Sauer, 10th) and 100 breast (Danielle Menard, 10th and Jen Totten, 14th). Katie Kaczka, who broke the school record in the 50 free on Thursday, placed 14th in the 200 free.
J.B. Worster joined Van Volkenburg as the Leopards to gather points on the men's side. The sophomore finished 11th in the 100 fly in 52.20.
The men's 800 free relay team (Brian Wolz, Seth Price, Worster, Van Volkenburg) was sixth in 7:00.62, and the 200 medley squad (Wolz, Brandon Beidel, Matt Kemmerer, Ryder Pingry) was seventh in 1:39.80.
The women's 800 free relay team (Nichols, Hulsizer, Littlefield, Kaczka) also placed sixth with a time of 7:51.61.
The Lafayette women currently reside in fourth place with 266.5 points, as they jumped Army (257.5) which held the fourth spot after action on day one. The men have 148 points and sit in seventh place heading into the final day of competition on Saturday.
