EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - The Lafayette track and field team returned to campus on Sunday night following a solid weekend at both the Lafayette-East Stroudsburg Invitational and Princeton's Larry Ellis distance meet on Friday night. Sophomores Ashley Harbin (hammer) and Frances Morro (steeplechase) both dashed Lafayette records in their respective events.
Although rain forced Saturday's meet at East Stroudsburg to be postponed, the Leopards bounced back for a respectable Sunday showing that turned out 13 winners across the board. The hammer throw, which was held at Lafayette's Fisher Field on Friday, provided a perfect start to the weekend, as Harbin broke the school record by nearly a foot. She won the event with a 186' 3" heave, bettering her NCAA Regional-qualifying distance.
Also on Friday, a handful of distance runners headed to Princeton's campus for the Tiger's Larry Ellis event. There, Morro broke her own school record in the 3000m steeplechase (11:20.09), while junior Lindsay Bryant ran a personal best in the same event (11:25.23). On the men's side, freshman Travis Wolfe notched a personal best in the 3000m steeplechase (9:15.57) to finish seventh. Junior Ed Dutch set a personal record in the 5000m run with a time of 14:57.93.
On Sunday's Lafayette-ESU Invitational, the Lafayette women came up with seven wins to back Harbin's record-breaking start. Sophomores Katie Schultes and Brittany Waldron finished first in the 1500m (4:55.56) and 800m events (2:22.95), while senior Deborah Fink took home the 400m hurdles in 1:01.66. Also on the track, Lafayette's 4x100m relay edged the Warriors for the win.
Senior Daria Szkwarko cleared 10' 6" to win the pole vault. Sophomore Emily Cholak and freshman Jessica Buzzell dominated both the long and triple jump events. Cholak won the triple (36' 1 ½"), while Buzzell finished second (35' 4 ½"). Buzzell took second in the long jump, while Cholak came in third.
Pam Glennon's 40' 7 ¾" hurl in the shot put won the event, as the senior just passed teammate Vicky Melroy for top billing. Senior Shannon Dorsey and Harbin swept the top two spots in the discus, as Dorsey won with a 129' 8" personal best mark.
For the men, senior Nick Baldwin ran away with the 3000m steeplechase title (9:52.46), while Lafayette recorded three wins in the field. Junior Tyler Jones won both the shot (50' 1 ¾") and the disc (156' 4"). Senior Steve Malloy rounded out the afternoon with a 187' 11" javelin throw for the win.
Both teams are scheduled to compete in the Penn Relays and Lehigh Invitational in the coming week. The women will hit the City of Brotherly Love on Thursday, while the men compete on Saturday. Some athletes will also participate in the Lehigh Invite on Saturday beginning at 10 a.m.
