Youth Reigns As Lafayette Places Sixth At Peacock Invitational

NESHANIC STATION, N.J. (www.lafayette.edu) - Head coach Jim Hutnik started three rookies and a pair of sophomores as the team took part in the St. Peter's Peacock Invitational on Tuesday at Heron Glen Country Club. The result was a solid sixth-place finish, matching the Leopards' second-best finish of the season. Sophomore Chris Johnston finished six-over-par to pace Lafayette, finishing tied for seventh overall.

Johnston was among 12 golfers to finish within five strokes of leader Brian McClure of Fordham. Johnston finished with a 78 (41-37), while McClure took home the title with a 73 (37-36) on the par-72, 7,069-yard course.

A slim one-stroke behind Johnston, classmate Pat Kelly tied for 12th with a 79 (43-36) in a field of 57 golfers. Also contributing to Lafayette's final score of 325 were freshmen Anoop Shah (41-42-83) and Bobby Ayala (44-41-85). Rookie Kenneth Suarez also competed, carding a 92 (47-45).

Fordham (310) won the tournament with a five-stroke cushion from second-place Monmouth (315). Fairleigh Dickinson took third (319), Fairfield fourth (323) and Lehigh fifth (324). Behind Lafayette were host St. Peter's (331), La Salle (336), Bucknell (340), Wagner (354) and Manhattan (373).

The Leopards will wrap-up the 2006 season on Wednesday afternoon with a quad match at Monmouth beginning at 1:30 p.m.
