BETHLEHEM, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - While a handful of Lafayette's athletes competed in last week's Penn Relays, the remainder of the team enjoyed a solid showing at Saturday's Lehigh Games. Freshman Jessica Buzzell won both the long and triple jumps as the Leopards' only multi-win performer.
Buzzell leapt 17' 5 ½" to take the long jump before coming back with a 36' mark in the triple jump. Buzzell just beat out teammate Emily Cholak in the latter, who earned second with a 35' 10 ½" tally. Also in the field, senior Shannon Dorsey came through with a 130' 8" heave in a discus triumph, while junior Danielle Sliva took second in the high jump (5' 3").
On the track, junior Vanessa Youngs finished second in both the 100 and 200-meter dashes with times of 12.30 and 25.30 seconds, respectively. Meanwhile, rookie Meaghan Darling took second in the 400m dash in 58.12 seconds. Moving on to the distance events, sophomore Katie Melhado turned in a third-place run in the 5000m (19:48.99). Lafayette also won the 4x100m relay in 48.43, edging Lehigh by seven-tenths of a second.
For the men, freshman Sean McAuley won the discus throw (150' 2") by nearly three feet. In addition, senior Jonathan Rowe took second in the hammer (167' 3").
Senior Andre Alleyne came in third in both the 100 (10.90) and 200m (22.60) events, while Brian Vail took second in the 400m dash in 50.44. Senior Nick Birosik managed a second-place run in the 5000m in 15:43.65. Lafayette's 4x100m relay team took second as well (42.30).
The Lehigh Games mark the Leopards' final tune-up prior to this weekend's Patriot League Championship meet. Action is set to begin on Friday at host Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass.
