PRINCETON, N.J. (www.lafayette.edu) - Lafayette track and field sent 13 student-athletes to compete in the ECAC and IC4A Championships, and senior Deborah Fink and sophomore Ashley Harbin made the most of their trip. The pair earned ECAC All-East honors in their respective events, becoming the first women to do so since Carrie Strong in 1999 (heptathlon).
Fink and Harbin had already qualified to compete in the NCAA Regional meet beginning in two weeks in Greensboro, N.C. earlier this outdoor season. In their final tune-up before the regional, Fink and Harbin took fifth in the 400m hurdles (1:00.88) and hammer throw (175' 5"), respectively. Fink just made the qualifying cut with an eighth-place mark in the prelims, but shaved nearly a full second off her time to finish fifth in the finals.
Also on the women's side, Lafayette's Patriot League Champion in the triple jump, Emily Cholak, tied for 19th in the event with a 38' 5 ½" leap. Sophomores Leigh Kalinowski (high jump), Kristen Kalinowski (high jump) and junior Lori Cooper (javelin) also represented Lafayette at the ECAC level.
In his final competition prior to graduation, senior Steve Malloy turned in a 13th-place finish in the javelin, hitting the 189' 6" mark. Meanwhile, junior Tyler Jones was the only Lafayette athlete to qualify for IC4A competition in two individual events. He took 19th in the shot put (49' 2 ¼") and 16th in the discus (141' 2"). Rounding out the Leopards in the field, rookie Shaun Adair's long jump of 22' 1 ¾" was enough for 21st.
On the track, the 4x100m relay team of Adair, freshman Kyle DeFranceschi, junior Travis Hutson and senior Andre Alleyne finished in 42.14. Individually, Hutson took 24th in the 100m dash (10.97), while sophomore Alex Wechsler finished 26th in the 1500m (3:52.68).
NCAA Regional action will take place May 26-27 on the campus of North Carolina A&T State. An 11 a.m. start is scheduled both days.
