TEANECK, N.J. - Lafayette swept a baseball doubleheader from Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday, winning game one 6-0 behind the strong arm of Matt Revelle while capturing game two, 3-2, thanks to Tom Ambrosole's RBI-double in extra innings.
In the opener, Lafayette (25-23) staked Revelle to a three-run lead after the first two innings and he did the rest on the hill, pitching the Leopards to a 6-0 victory.
In the first inning, Ian Law led off with a single, the first of his four hits in the game. Ambrosole moved him into scoring position with a groundout and he later scored on a throwing error. The Leopards took a 3-0 lead in the second inning plating two more runs on an error and an RBI-single from Law.
Law finished off his 4-for-4 game with a lead-off double in the seventh inning. Ambrosole drove him in with his own two-bagger down the rightfield line. Two of FDU's five errors in the game led to another pair of runs to put the final at 6-0.
Revelle (6-3) allowed just four hits, a double and three singles, while striking out four to earn the victory. John O'Hara (3-5), who threw 6.2 innings and surrendered six runs (two earned) on six hits, was charged with the loss.
The nightcap was also scheduled for seven innings, but it went to extras before Ambrosole doubled home Kevin Leasure to award Lafayette a 3-2 decision.
It was a pitchers' duel throughout. The Leopards again set the tone early with a run in the first. A fielding error put lead-off hitter, Law, on base. With one out in the inning, Jeff Butler doubled and moved Law to third. Law scored on Leasure's RBI-groundout.
The Leopards and starting pitcher Matt Kamine held the lead into the sixth when Fairleigh Dickinson (9-34) struck for a pair of runs. Chris Grabowski doubled home a run to tie the game and Matt Born used a sac fly to give the Knights a 2-1 advantage. That was the last inning for Kamine who gave up two runs on five hits in a no-decision.
Lafayette answered immediately in the Leopards' last scheduled at-bat. Head coach Joe Kinney's move substitutions paid huge dividends. Joe Ezekiel pinch hit to lead off the inning with a double. Kinney pinch ran for Ezekiel with Tom Hayes. Hayes scored to tie the game at 2-2 when pinch hitter Kevin Resse doubled down the rightfield line.
Steve Roberts threw a scoreless seventh in relief of Kamine and that set the stage for the Leopards in the eighth inning. Lafayette had two outs in the inning before Leasure kept things going with a single. Ambrosole snapped the 2-2 tie when he doubled home Leasure to hand Lafayette the 3-2 margin.
Jason Morytko came on in the eighth inning and sealed the victory in his second save of the season.
Lafayette, which has won seven of its last eight games, and FDU will finish off the four-game series on Sunday beginning at 1 p.m. at the Class of 1978 Stadium. Prior to the doubleheader, Lafayette seniors Matt Revelle and Ian Law will be honored.
