PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - A pair of second-half goals from junior forward Laura Fabian erased an early Saint Joseph's lead, as the Leopards picked up their first win of the 2006 season in the City of Brotherly Love late Wednesday afternoon by a 2-1 score.
The Hawks drew first blood in the 14th minute, as Lauren Luft tucked the ball into the left corner off a pass from teammate Marisa Pizzi. The 1-0 score would stand until the break.
As the second half opened, Lafayette quickly leveled the score at 1-1 in the 38th minute. Fabian fired in the equalizer off a rebound just 3:04 into the period. St. Joe's keeper Rebecca Cufner handled senior forward Maggie DeFilippo's shot, but Fabian gathered the rebound and came up with the score.
The game remained tied over the ensuing 11-plus minutes before Fabian struck again for her first game-winner of the season. Again Fabian scored unassisted with a put-back following a deflected shot from sophomore forward Maggie Condon at the 50:26 mark.
The Leopards' defense worked hard to hold the lead, including a key save credited to Lafayette keeper Jill Lambert in the 61st minute. The Hawks failed to convert on three penalty corner opportunities in the final 6:25.
Lambert, who entered the game ranked third in the Patriot League with 8.40 saves per game, added seven more to her total against the Hawks.
Although the Hawks out-shot Lafayette 19-8, the Leopards' efficiency worked to their advantage, totaling six shots on goal. Condon led the team with three.
The Leopards (1-5) will look to keep the momentum going against as their second straight Atlantic 10 opponent. Lafayette is set to host Temple on Sunday, Sept. 24 at 1 p.m.
