EASTON, Pa. (www.lafayette.edu) - Columbia scored three first-half goals and found the net again just 45 ticks into the second stanza en route to a 4-0 win over Lafayette on Wednesday night at Columbia's new venue at Baker Field Athletics Complex.
The Lions' Christine Buszczak took a long cross from teammate Laura Cosan and beat Lafayette (1-7) goalkeeper Jill Lambert just 3:33 into the contest. The Lions made it 2-0 just under five minutes later, as Cosan earned a goal of her own off a pass from Liz Reeve.
The Leopards upped the defensive intensity from there, but it was Columbia (3-5) scoring again in the 29th minute to make take a 3-0 lead into intermission.
The Lions came out to score their fourth and final goal just 45 seconds into the second half, but the hole was already too big for the Leopards to recover from. Although Lafayette peppered Columbia keeper Gena Miller with 13 second-half shots, Miller was able to stop all four of Lafayette's shots on goal.
The Leopards out-shot Columbia 18-10 on the night and held a 10-2 advantage on penalty corners. Senior forward Maggie DeFilippo and sophomore midfielder Maggie Condon accounted for a dozen of the Leopards' scoring opportunities, racking-up six shots apiece.
Junior back-up goalie Caitlin Burke saw her first action of the 2006 season, playing the entire second half between the pipes. Burke allowed one goal and made the Leopards' only save on the night.
Lafayette travels to Worcester, Mass. for its Patriot League opener against Holy Cross at 12 p.m. on Saturday.
