Women's Weight Throw Results
NEW YORK, N.Y. - Juniors Alex Wechsler and Emily Cholak led a strong Leopard contingent on Friday afternoon in the New York City Gotham Cup at the Armory. Wechsler finished second in the men's 1000 meters, while Cholak placed third in the women's triple jump.
Cholak, the defending Patriot League triple jump champion, leaped 38'1" in the finals of the triple jump. She also managed to place 14th in the long jump, falling right behind teammate Jessica Buzzell who tallied a mark of 16'11".
The Leopard women also gained a solid result from senior Danielle Silva in the high jump. The Monroe, Conn. native cleared 5'3" to finish ninth in the event. Fellow senior Megan Baker also stepped into the spotlight when she recorded a fourth place finish in the women's 800 meter. Baker crossed the line with a time of 2:17.20, eight seconds behind the leader.
Another strong performance was turned in by the Lafayette throwing corps. The Leopards placed four in the top 10 of the women's weight throw, led by reigning ECAC and Patriot League Female Field Athlete of the Week Ashley Harbin, whose throw of 55'1" claimed the title. Joining Harbin in the top 10 was junior Andrea Cerbie turning in a third place finish (49'6") and sophomores Sue Izevbigie (44'11") and Vicky Melroy (43'8") coming in seventh and eighth, respctively.
Lafayette also placed three in the top 10 of the women's shot put, led by Izevbigie. The Springdale, Md. turned in a mark of 44'2" that gave her a third place finish. Joining Izevbigie in the top 10 were Pamela Glennon (40'2") and Cerbie (40'1"), notching ninth and tenth place showings.
The men were led by Wechsler. The junior Economics and Business major turned in a second place finish in the men's 1000 meters. His time of 2:28.02 came in less than two seconds behind winner Ted Towle of Westchester TC and qualfied him for the IC4A Championships.
Senior Tyler Jones continued his early season notoriety as one of the region's elite throwers. Jones threw for a 52'7" third place mark in the shot put, before following that up with a 51'7" effort in the weight throw to finish in eighth.
The Leopard runners were led by the 4x800 relay team. Weschler, along with Sean Casey, Matthew DeBlander and Rob Blum, finished with a time of 7:50.99, trailing only Texas and Coppin State for a third place finish. The time qualified the foursome for the IC4A Championships later this season.
Seniors Ed Dutch and Steve Ekema-Agbaw also notched impressive results. Dutch turned in a seventh place finish in the 5000 meters, while Ekema-Agbaw finished sixth in the triple jump, leaping 47'5".
The Leopards will use the next week to prepare for the Lehigh Dual on January 20 in Bethlehem, Pa.
