March 29, 2007

Box Score

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Wagner plated 11 runs in the middle innings to secure a 13-7 win over Lafayette in non-conference baseball action on Thursday afternoon at Willetts Field.

Trailing 1-0 going into the top of the four, Lafayette took its only lead of the game with two runs in the inning. Kevin Leasure hit his third home run of the season and Mike Raible singled home Daniel Bierce (3-for-5) who started off the inning with a double.

In the bottom of the fourth, Wagner answered with six runs and took control of the game. Ed Sudol (3-for-5, 5 RBI) plated three on his own with a bases-loaded triple off Brian Cope. The Seahawks sent nine batters to the plate in the inning and scored three more runs before the rally ended with Wagner holding a 7-2 lead.

Wagner (4-11) extended its lead to 12-4 with three runs in the fourth and two in the fifth. Lafayette scored a run in each of those innings, thanks to Tom Ambrosole who led off the fifth with a home run and added an RBI-single in the sixth. Ambrosole, a Staten Island native, was playing in front of his hometown fans and finished 2-for-3 with two RBI.

Lafayette (8-10) made a little noise in the top of the ninth, loading the bases with one out. Bierce (single), Justin Shepherd (walk) and Raible (sac fly) all managed to drive in runs to put the final at 13-7.

Cope (1-1) took the loss, giving up five runs (four earned) on two hits and two walks. Andrew Huebner (1-0) threw five full innings in the mound victory. He struck out three and allowed three runs on five hits and two walks.

Lafayette will play its first home game of the season on Saturday at noon. The Leopards host Army in a four-game Patriot League series.

NOTES:

Instead of teaming up with Dave Drechsel, who is normally behind the plate for the Leopards, Lafayette faced off against Chris Drechsel who is the starting catcher for Wagner. Dave, the older brother, had the day off.

James Conrad swiped his 12th base of the season, tying him with Navy's Renaldo Hollins for the Patriot League lead.
