PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Rutgers pitching staff slowed down Lafayette's bats in a 6-1 win on Thursday in non-conference baseball action at Bainton Field.
Rutgers (27-16) scored two runs in the first off Lafayette starter Brian Cope (4-2) and that was all of the offense the Scarlet Knights needed in the contest. Tom Edwards singled through the right side to bring home both runs.
In the fifth Rutgers padded its lead to 3-0. A lead-off double by No. 9 hitter Luis Feliz got things started. Cope struck out the lead-off hitter for the first out of the inning, but hit the next batter. Head coach Joe Kinney brought on John Fugett. He walked the first batter he faced to load the bases. A Williams' ground out scored Feliz before Fugett struck out Edwards to end the inning.
The Leopards (28-16) scored their only run of the game in the sixth inning. With two outs, James Conrad (2-for-3) reached on an infield single. Chris Luick (2-for-4) stepped to the plate and legged out a triple that scored Conrad and cut Rutgers' lead to 3-1.
The Scarlet Knights scored two runs on four hits in the bottom of the sixth and added another run on two hits in the eighth for the 6-1 final.
Cope took the loss, allowing three runs on five hits with three strikeouts in 4.1 innings. Fugett, Steve Roberts, Jason Morytko and Brad Woodfield all pitched in relief for the Leopards who gave up 12 hits on the day. Rutgers' Sean Spicer threw 5.2 innings in the victory, surrendering one run on four hits.
Lafayette will close out the regular season by hosting a three-game series vs. UMBC this weekend. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. and a single, nine-inning game on Sunday at 1 p.m. Prior to Sunday's first pitch, Lafayette's nine seniors and their families will be honored.
