STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - Though sophomore goalkeeper Kelsey Andersen recorded a career-high nine saves, the Lafayette field hockey team couldn't topple No. 14 Penn State on Wednesday night, losing 3-0.
The loss snapped a three-game winning streak, and it was the first time the Leopards (7-4) have been shutout this season. Senior midfielder Maggie Condon took all of Lafayette's three shots but couldn't connect with the cage.
Penn State scored all three of its goals in the first half. Bethany Marvel kicked things off quickly, scoring less than three minutes into the game. Penn State would go on to score two more goals midway through the first half.
Andersen snagged six saves in the first half - tying the most she had touched in a game all season. She added three more saves after halftime for a new career-high.
The Leopards allowed 16 shots in the first period but buckled down in the second half, limiting the Nittany Lions to five shots. Junior Jaclyn DiSanti recorded her third defensive save of the season.
Lafayette will return home on Saturday at 1 p.m. for its Patriot League opener against Bucknell.
