WORCESTER, Mass. - The Lafayette field hockey team improved to 2-0 in league play with a 1-0 win over Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass. on Saturday afternoon. Senior Maggie Condon scored the game's only goal as the Leopards improved its overall record to 9-5.
Lafayette (9-5, 2-0) held the Crusaders (4-7. 0-2) without a shot for the entire 70 minutes of action for the 1-0 shutout. The Leopards meanwhile took 12 shots in the game, including 10 on goal, with Condon taking five of those shots. The Lafayette attack forced Holy Cross goalie Erin Singleton to make 12 saves in the game.
Condon's goal, which stood as the game winner, came at the 20:30 mark in the first half. The score followed a Lafayette penalty corner, one of their nine in the contest. The Leopards finished the opening half with five shots and four penalty corner opportunities.
The second half saw Lafayette take seven shots with Singleton making saves on all seven. Alison Schoch and Lindsay Majno had looks at the goal within 20 seconds of each other early in the second period but both were saved by Singleton. The Leopards had several chances to put an insurance goal on the board including a shot by Condon with just over five minutes to play but it was stopped by Singleton.
The Lafayette defense made sure no insurance goals were needed, however, as the Leopards went on to the 1-0 league victory.
Lafayette returns to action next weekend when they travel to Patriot League archrival Lehigh on Saturday. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Postgame Notes:
- The win broke Lafayette's six-game winless streak against the Crusaders.
- Condon now has a team-high 12 goals this season and with her three assists leads the team in points with 27.
- The shut out was the Leopards' third of the season.
