WASHINGTON D.C. - Though the Lafayette field hockey team shut out No. 18 American in the first half, the Eagles were able to score three times in the second period to hand the Leopards a 3-1 defeat on Saturday. With the loss, Lafayette (10-6, 3-1) snapped its three-game win streak in league play.
With the win, American (9-6, 4-0) will host the Patriot League Tournament on Nov. 7-8.
Sophomore defender Meghan Cicchi scored Lafayette's lone goal with less than eight minutes remaining to prevent a shutout. The score was her second of the season, both in consecutive games.
Lafayette limited American to roughly half of their average shots per game. Heading into Saturday, the Eagles averaged about 13 shots per game but only managed six against the Leopards' defense.
The Leopards took five shots on goal compared to American's three, but Eagles goalkeeper Alyssa Poorman saved three of Lafayette's attempts.
Lafayette will return to Rappolt Field on Wednesday after compiling a 2-2 record during its four-game road trip. The Leopards will face West Chester at 7 p.m.
