WASHINGTON D.C. - The Lafayette field hockey team finished its season on Friday in the Patriot League Tournament semifinals with a 4-2 loss to Bucknell. The Leopards (12-7, 4-1) accumulated the most wins by the program since 2003, when that squad went 13-7.
Katie Ruiz gave the Bison their first score barely 10 minutes into the game on a cross from the right side of the cage. Bucknell struck again two minutes later for a 2-0 lead less than halfway through the first period.
The Leopards were undaunted by the early deficit. Freshman Carolyn Cabrey stole the ball and forwarded it to junior Lindsay Majno. Majno juked past a Bucknell defender as she flew on a breakaway down field and managed to draw a corner.
Senior Maggie Condon, assisted by Jaclyn DiSanti and Majno, put the Leopards on the scoreboard before the close of the half.
The Bison came out firing in the second half, scoring two unanswered goals before Lafayette called a timeout with a little more than 10 minutes remaining in the game. The regrouping worked, and Bridget Hilbig scored off an assist by Lauren Jones to make the score at 4-2.
American squashed Colgate, 5-1, in the first semifinal. Bucknell will go on to play the first-seeded Eagles on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in the championship game.
