EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette football coaching staff inked the commitments of 28 student-athletes who will join a Leopard program that has secured the Patriot League title and NCAA FCS Play-Off berths in three of the last four seasons.
The Leopards have brought in 14 players on the offensive side of the ball, four each at wide receiver, running back and offensive line along with one quarterback and one tight end. The offensive unit will be under the control of offensive coordinator Bob Heffner who will see Rob Curley return to quarterback and a host of running backs vying for the starting spot including Maurice White, DeAndre' Morrow and Tyrell Coon, all of whom showed flashes of brilliance in 2007.
Six linemen, four linebackers and four defensive backs join a Lafayette defense which finished first in the country in overall defense during the 2007 season. That defensive corps also welcomes back the 2007 Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year in Andy Romans.
The members of the Class of 2012 come to College Hill from eight different states, with 10 players from Pennsylvania, six from Florida, four from New Jersey, three from New York, two from Maryland and one player each from Virginia, Ohio and Georgia.
"We feel confident that it is a strong class," said ninth-year Lafayette head coach Frank Tavani. "We feel like we fulfilled our positional needs as far as talent and depth. We were right on where we wanted to be in terms of numbers at certain positions.
"Overall, we are very pleased with the recruiting process this season," Tavani continued, "especially with the high percentage of commitments in comparison to the number of visits we had. Over 75 percent of the recruits we invited to campus committed to be part of Lafayette football. We feel that this group will help us maintain our championship standards."
Coming off a 7-4 campaign in 2007 and a second-place finish in the Patriot League, Lafayette will open the 2008 season at Marist on Sept. 6.
